Leading up to our wedding, a lot of effort went into making a slideshow of our early years. Thanks must be given to our parents that went to a lot of effort to go through old photo albums, then select photos, scan them and then upload lots of photos. Then it took several weeks here in PNG to download, sort, chose, place in order, upload them again and chose soundtracks. Thanks to Andy too for putting it all together for us. We were able to show this video at all three receptions and will be showing it again at our Kudjip reception this Sunday for all our national friends and staff on station. If you missed seeing it or would like to see it again, hope you enjoy it.

In August Orphanlist’s Dave Schreier returned to PNG to visit and continue assisting BFO. During his time here he recorded a video tour of the Orphanage, which is now completed. Something that I have wanted to post for a long time now and filmed with Aunty Rosa last December, but yet to put it together. I hope by you watching this video, you will realise the great need the Orphanage has in purchasing a property and getting these kids out of the settlement and out of town. Remember to check out Orphanlist.org to individually sponsor a child at BFO or meet a specific need of the Orphanage. Thanks Dave, was great seeing you again and I love your work!

With MAF PNG celebrating sixty years of service this year, I really wanted to post some historically posts, including this one. This video was made in 1969 for MAF by Pilgram Films, Sydney and is a gem of MAF history. Sadly it was almost lost forever, but saved from being thrown away and later converted to DVD (thank you Petra!). This film stars some famous MAF greats, enjoy.

I filmed quite a bit in my first few months in country. But since then it has only been to make specific videos. I have a heap of footage from POC and especially my week of village living back in June 2008. I spent my week in a village east of Madang called Dogea. I actually saw it from the air when we flew from Madang to Port Moresby after conference last month. My last night in the village was a special one. There was a sing sing and other activities in the village. But amongst all that I also gave my waspapa (guardian) and wasmama another cultural experience of mine, eating mint slices. They were my favourite biscuit for many years, but since then I have converted to Tim Tam’s being my favourite. This was possibly the last packet in  all of Madang, they were pretty melted by the time we ate them. I did well living off rice and can meat for a week, not to eat these in advance. It is encouraging to see that my Tok Pisin has developed since then. Anyway you can see them experiencing their first mint slice.

Today is sixty years since the first flight by MAF in Papua New Guinea. The flight was by Harry Hartwig in an Auster Aerocar departing from Madang. For the month of May seventy five hours was flown, carrying thirty passengers and 15,000 lb of cargo.

I was asked to put together a video for the 60th celebrations which will be shown to the PNG government and to different bush communities. I didn’t have the selection of footage that I would of like to choose from. But it came together in the end and worked out okay. All the recent footage is amateur footage by myself or Ed Laninga. There is only a few clips from a previous MAF video. This is the final draft, hope you enjoy it.

It is also three years since I arrived in PNG on returning to serve with MAF. I am really grateful for the last three years of life and experiences God has given me. It is a privilege to serve the Lord with MAF in PNG. Praise the Lord for the way he has used MAF in Papua New Guinea the last sixty years. Happy 60th anniversary MAF PNG!

In PNG Easter is also a long weekend, being a Christian nation. I have had the opportunity of spending Easter out at Kudjip, espeically as we were able to finish a Twin Otter B check on Thursday. It has been a great blessing to spend Easter here with Becky and other missionaires. It has been a good time of fellowship and activities. Friday night Emmuael church on Kudjip station had a Good Friday service in the evening. And this morning had a Resurrection Sunday service.

    It's Sunday

    1. A view from our hike yesterday

Friday’s night service saw the Kudjip missionaires perform different items and preach a sermon. The sermon was on the difference Christ made between Friday and Sunday. Jesus’ desciples were amazed by Herod the Great’s temple. But Jesus said to them that He would destroy it and then raise it in three days. They were impressed by this temple, just as we are impressed by things in this world. We can easily be impressed by things in this world, things that don’t impress God. But we should be impressed by what Jesus has done. He died on Friday and then rose on Sunday. Conquering death, sin and satan (very brief summary of message from this morning’s church service). On Friday there was sorrow, fear and loss. But Sunday brought life, joy and hope. So we may be experiencing a Friday, a dark part of our life, but Sunday is coming. I am amazed at what that Friday must of been like for the disciples. Which reminded me of this video with an audio clip from a Dr S.M. Lockridge preaching. But come Sunday everything was made new. Praise God for doing the impossible.

Another good video with Dr S.M. Lockridge on youtube is: That’s my King, check it out.

One country in the Asia Pacific region that MAF is serving in is Bangladesh. One third of the country is covered by water. MAF has one Cessna 208 float plane based in Dhaka serving the isolated communities of the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta. Using this amphibious (water or land) float plane to serve humanitarian and medical NGO’s, provide an air ambulance service and assist in disaster relief operations into some of the most remote and hard to reach areas of the country. There are two pilot families and one engineer family based in Dhaka, along with national staff.

One of the pilot families is Timon’s (my good friend and housemate) parents, Emil and Margrit. Who have been serving with MAF for over twenty five years now in different parts of Africa and Asia. Serving in Chad,  Uganda, Madagascar, Cambodia and Bangladesh. Here is a video off youtube staring Timon’s Dad Emil and showing  MAF serving the Bholas Children Foundation. An organisation serving orphaned and disabled children on Bhola Island in Southern Bangladesh..

Last year I started a tradition I hope to do each year. Putting together a video that helps me look back on the past year. This video is half the length of last years video, which was hard to make short. I can not believe how quick 2010 past by. It was by far the quickest passing of a year I have ever experienced. It was like last month we were celebrating New Years for the start of 2010. I remember when I was little that a year was like an eternity. I have really seen in the last year how quickly life passes by. When I look back on last year it seems that I did not have as many adventures (we didn’t climb any mountains) or travel  as much as in 2009. But 2010 had just as many adventures and travels. It was a full on year with plenty of opportunities including hardships, challenges and victories. This included gaining my PNG Airframe and Aussie licenses, experiencing my first furlough, starting another term of service in PNG and burning out. I am grateful for the Lord’s faithfulness in 2010 and sustaining me throughout. And for the support of family, friends and supporters. I am excited to see what the Lord has installed in 2011 and the privilege I have to walk with and serve Him for another year,  God willing.

‘Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” James 4:13-15

I have been meaning to make a video for BFO for a while now. This one was purposely made for a concert in Canada organised and run by Mike Davis’ sister, Norma Cook and family. The concert was this morning around 0600 our time, to promote awareness and fund raise for Bible Faith Orphanage.

Initially I thought I had till the end of September to get the video done. Due to busyness I couldn’t make time to work on the video in August or September. The same week I was heading to Wewak for a break I learnt that it was due a lot sooner. I was able to work on it this week,  Wednesday night working on it into the morning and finishing it Thursday night. It was bit of a rush job, but would have to do. I didn’t even get to ask permission to use the song for the video, I tried without success. Hopefully a higher quality version was uploaded Friday night and premiered at the concert this morning. This video took around six hours all up to put together and compress. I really love the way a video can come together.

After putting together a video, there is more work. The challenge of uploading it, which is not easy here in PNG. Normally I have to upload the video in small segments via ftp (which is painful) and then Andy has to download them, put the video back to together and upload it for me to a video hosting site, Vimeo. For some reason for the first time ever I was able to upload the complete video to Vimeo. I much appreciate Andy’s support from Australia in getting videos uploaded.

It contains some photos by Dave Schreier and some photos and video I took at the Christmas celebration last year. It doesn’t show all that the ministry does and what these kids go through, but I hope this video brings BFO more to life for people.

Wednesday the other week was MFU’s return to service flight after a C check which lasted more than five weeks. An aircraft requires a check flight after any maintenance that affects the flight characteristics of the aircraft. One is normally done after a C check, especially as a large amount of work is done. One or two Engineer’s go along to observe the flight. The Pilot’s put the aircraft through it’s operational limits, sometimes causing those on board to be sick as they pull positive 2G’s and negative 1G. Following the check flight the Pilot’s give feedback to the Engineer’s on it’s performance and anything that might need adjusting.

I was unable to make a video of the C check, so spur of the moment I filmed the RTS from the outside. Next time I will try and film one from the inside. One annoying thing is my still camera doesn’t capture the prop rotation correctly and gives a strobe affect. I made this video seriously, but as it came more together in the end it made me laugh a bit. If someone can guess the music in the video, they may win a prize. It is always good to see an aircraft back flying after large amounts of maintenance carried out.

PS the Twin Otter Captain in this video, Mike Davis, has 22 years of experience flying Twin Otters. He is also Canadian and the Twin Otter is from Canada, just to help explain some of the video.
